Event Description:
Butler County is proud to celebrate 200 years of history, 1819-2019, with the State of Alabama’s Bicentennial. Founded on December 13th, 1819, we’re a county one day older than the state! We want to share our history and heritage with local residents as well as visitors, and we hope that people of all ages and all ethnic backgrounds will join us at the event – appreciating and enjoying our local history and culture. Butler County has a rich and interesting past, and we want as many people as possible to learn more about it.
The Bicentennial of our county AND our state will only happen once in our lifetimes – let's make the most of it!

Celebrating Alabama's Bicentennial as well as 200 years of Butler County's existence, our celebration event will include:
– Welcome tent hosted by Greenville Area Chamber of Commerce
– Center stage with DJ emcees, speakers, performances
– Greenville High School ROTC presentation of colors (flag ceremony), GHS band concert, patriotic songs and music
– Historic persona “in costume” dramatic reading
– Local history displays by Butler County Historical Society, Daughters of American Revolution, Butler Baptist Association, and other groups
– Community history displays created by people of different communities/towns throughout Butler County
– Founding people of Butler County displays (Native Americans, Pioneers/Settlers, Black History)
– Local churches and landmark Ritz Theater on Commerce Street will be open for tours
– Tours of Pioneer Cemetery: Greenville's oldest cemetery and one of the oldest cemeteries in Butler County, assisted by adults and school children in historic costume
– Children's hands-on-history area, refreshments area, and comfort stations
We're appreciating the past, honoring our county's founding peoples, and looking forward to the future as we go into the NEXT two hundred years of history.
